"I spent half of my life growing up in Mexico, seeing the great needs and hard times people were suffering through there. This is how I came to realize I wanted to help others. When I came to the USA in 1990, I had the opportunity to volunteer in a food bank helping the Latino community. Ever since, I have found ways to serve my community through different assistance programs. My desire to become a breast health educator grew even more when I found out that my culture is lacking in breast cancer awareness leading to later stage diagnosis. The Breast Cancer Resource Center has given me the opportunity to do this wonderful job where I am able to help raise the awareness of breast cancer, educate women on breast health, and help improve the odds of my community through early detection of this devastating disease."

Marilyn Levinsohn, RN, MPH
Community Outreach Worker
"I grew up on a small farm in rural Minnesota where very early on I learned the importance of community. Neighbors helped one another through joyous times as well as through personal and farm-related losses. These experiences prepared me for my 54-year career as a nurse. For the past thirty years I have been engaged in community health nursing and education by teaching nursing students. I retired and shortly thereafter found I had breast cancer and was treated. Early diagnosis was the key. It then became very important for me to help raise the awareness of breast health in women throughout Pierce County by way of community education which continues to bring with it many rewards."

Doris L. Harris
Community Outreach Worker
"I currently serve the African American and LGBTQ communities in both Pierce and South King County as Community Outreach Worker for the BCRC and as Breast Cancer Navigator in collaboration with the Franciscan Health System allowing me the opportunity to educate women about breast health and support them at every step along their unique journey, from screening through treatment."

Roxana Casteneda
Community Outreach Worker
"My legal and advocacy background compels me to approach my job as a supporter for women's health. As an advocate, I encourage women to take charge of their breast health and show them how to do so. When informing women about prevention of breast cancer in their own language (Spanish) I also empower them to take responsibility and become invested in their own health."
